Here's a bit of reality for the 'Idol' generation. Apparently Hip-Hop album sales dropped a horrifying 20% last year. Personally, I don't think its because there wasn't anything good to buy in '06. I think 20% of rap fans became rappers themselves in 2006, and you know once dudes start rapping they no longer are interested in buying sh*t (Rueters). 904 Politics: Governor Wants Music Biz To Come To Florida
Photobucket GOVERNOR CRIST CALLS FOR TASK FORCE TO STRENGTHEN FLORIDA’S MUSIC RECORDING INDUSTRY

August 8, 2008

MIAMI BEACH –
Governor Charlie Crist today, continuing his focus on strengthening Florida’s economy, directed the Office of Film and Entertainment within the Governor’s Office of Tourism, Trade, and Economic Development to establish a Music Recording Industry Task Force to identify issues impacting Florida’s music recording industry. The task force will also develop recommendations regarding strategies for strengthening and expanding Florida’s current music recording industry.

“A rich variety of music from many cultures permeates Florida’s lifestyle, with many recording artists and recording studios calling the Sunshine State home,” Governor Crist said. “In the same way we have been able to attract and retain Florida businesses in other entertainment sectors, I believe we can do the same for the music industry...”

2008 Rock the Bells Invades Florida (Mia)
Note: Maaaaan....Wouldn't it be heaven to get a real Hip-Hop festival to pop off in Duval? Imagine what it would look like if Rock The Bells popped off at Metropolitian Park in 2009! Btw, 1993-'94 (aka the G.O.A.T. era in hip-hop) had The Pharcyde, Nas, Redman, Method Man, & ATCQ at their peak and they still running sh*t!

Rhymes and punishment

August 3, 2008

Rock the Bells came to Miami on Saturday promising real, honest hip-hop relief from the stupidity that has allegedly overrun rap.

Some performers at Bayfront Park amphitheater spoke and rhymed about the need to "take hip hop back," presumably from a crop of artless, money-crazed knuckleheads. Los Angeles rapper Murs even called one out by name, the million-selling, teenaged mumbler known as Soulja Boy. Murs joked that he would "smack him" on sight, even at the risk of getting beaten up...

Game Changer Alert: Beats by Dr. Dre Headphones
Note: I know, I know...$400 is steep, but Dr. Dre has always been a trailblazer when it comes to his music and now he's co-signing studio equipment with the new Beats by Dr. Dre. Watch for these hi-end headphones to start popping up in rap videos any day now.

Monster Beats by Dr. Dre only $400

Dr. Dre, Interscope Chairman Jimmy Iovine and Monster, the leader in audio/video accessories, have finally announced a date for their headphones collaboration, Beats by Dr. Dre.

The producer unveiled the line of high-end headphones at the Consumer Electronics Show tradeshow in Las Vegas, Nevada in January, and now they will be in stores this Friday (July 25), and will retail for $349.95.

"Artists and producers work hard in the studio perfecting their sound, but people can't really hear it with normal headphones," said Dre. "Most headphones can't handle the bass, the detail, the dynamics. Bottom line: the music doesn't move you. With Beats, people are going to hear what the artists hear and listen to the music the way they should -- the way I do..."

Report: Weaver trying to sell Jaguars...Headed to L.A?

The Jaguars had no immediate comment Wednesday night on a Philadelphia Daily News report that team owner Wayne Weaver is negotiating to sell the team to billionaire C. Dean Metropoulos, who could move the team to Los Angeles...

904 EDITORIAL: Lil Wayne to the Rescue!
Note: Lil Wayne, Lil Wayne, Lil Wayne...You can't escape him. From hooks to cameos, to mixtapes and ringtones its become "Wayne's World" to say the least. Check out this excellent article on why he did the unthinkable this week (sold a "Milli" in a week) and why its not likely to change much in Hip-Hop's downturn.

Can Lil Wayne save hip-hop?

He insists he's "the best rapper alive" -- and many agree. But can his smash-hit new album really redeem a flagging genre?

By Jess Harvell

June 19, 2008 | Hip-hop critics and fans honestly want Lil Wayne to be huge. "Tha Carter III," the rapper's sixth solo album in the past nine years, was released last week after nearly a year's worth of delays, the sort of drawn-out tussling between artist and label that usually helps to throw a bucket of cold water on heated fan anticipation. Instead, the album is likely to be sitting at the top of the Billboard Hot 200 after massive first-week sales; blogs are falling over themselves to offer the most in-depth analysis of what many dubbed a masterpiece just hours after it hit the Internet. And all of this attention is something of a fitting reward for Wayne, having spent a decade-plus as a hip-hop workaholic, a man who is, in his own estimation and increasingly in the minds of thousands of hip-hop fans, "the best rapper alive...."

904 Politics: Obama To Rally In Duval!
******** Breaking News ********

Note: Should be an exciting event to say the least. What's happening in the Obama campaign is more like a Rock Star movement than a Presidential election. Obama carried Duval county in the unofficial primaries back in January by 10 points and should do even better in the general election. Hope to see many from the 904 artistic scene out at this rally. Time to get on board folks...This IS happening!

PRESIDENTIAL HOPEFUL BARACK OBAMA COMING TO JACKSONVILLE FOR HUGE RALLY

By STEVE PATTERSON

The Times-Union

Sen. Barack Obama, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, will visit Jacksonville on June 20, according to people familiar with plans for the visit.

Obama is expected to attend a $500-a-person fundraiser at the Prime Osborn Convention Center. It will be his first trip to the city since last year, when his campaign in Florida was cut short by disagreements over the date of the state’s presidential primary...

904 EDITORIAL: Gunshine State featured in July XXL Magazine
Note: As soon as you get a chance pick up a copy of XXL Magazine's July issue on the Florida Rap movement. The issue has a truck load of good historical coverage on the who's who in Florida movement and a very interesting "Top 10 Next to Blow." A couple of caveats: Usually these scene/movement cover stories denote a 'top' or peak in a movement (think ATL '07, Houston '06), and don't expect to see any 904 artist mentioned...When it comes to Jacksonville's scene...*crickets*!

Original Gators:
Florida Rap History

“When hip-hop was coming of age in the ’80s, Florida was famous for one sound…booty music.”

Florida is hot! Okay, not exactly a news flash on The Weather Channel. But musicwise, the Gunshine State’s current climate has less to do with its proximity to the equator and more to do with the wide variety of hits emanating from within its borders. From kingpin coke rap (Rick Ross’s “The Boss”) and club-bumping party starters (Flo Rida’s “Low”) to raunchy bedroom talk (Trina’s “Look Back at Me”) and thug-love cavalier poetry (Plies’s “Bust It Baby”), hip-hop’s current place to be finds strength in its diversity... This wasn’t always the case. When hip-hop was coming of age in the ’80s, Florida was famous for one sound, and one sound only: the combination of frantic tempo, heavy 808 beats and sexed-up lyrics known as Miami bass, or booty music...

904 MCs: Young Ca$h Signs With T-Pain's Digital Label

T-Pain's Digital Label Unveils Signings

June 05, 2008, 7:25 PM ET
Hillary Crosley, N.Y.

After revealing his Nappy Boy digital label to Billboard.com last year, T-Pain has chosen his first artist, Tay Dizm.

Miami native Dizm's debut single, "Beam Me Up" featuring T-Pain and Rick Ross, hit the Web on May 30. The track is now available on iTunes and has sold 4,000 downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan, without significant promotion.

"It's been tearing up the Internet," says T-Pain. "A producer named Bangladash produced the song, not me, because I don't want my artist's LP to sound like a another T-Pain album."

Nappy Boy's other arists include Young Cash, an MC from Jacksonville, Fla., Sophia Fresh, a female R&B group from Houston that Pain describes as a contemporary TLC, and R&B singer Jay Lyriq from Tallahassee, Fla. Though Nappy Boy is a digital label, the company doesn't plan to ignore physical product. "We'll eventually release physical albums," says T-Pain. "Right now they still represent 45% of album sales, so we won't ignore it. But in three or four years, there won't be anymore records stores, so we'll be ready..."

Inside The Circle - USA

Capturing the raw power of a grassroots hip-hop movement in the heart of Texas, INSIDE THE CIRCLE tells the story of two strikingly talented b-boys, Josh and Omar, former best friends who become rivals when they join competing dance crews. Immersed in the b-boy culture of defiant creativity, Omar rises to international renown while Josh tangles with the Texas criminal justice system. Both of them struggle to keep dance at the center of their lives, and the “B-Boy City” competitive events thrown by visionary street dancer Romeo Navarro serve as emotional milestones in their journey to adulthood...

Game Changer Alert: TENORI-ON ''Light Beat Machine''
Note: Recently played with one of these at the Guitar Center. Pretty easy to sound like a "pro" right out the gate and just about anyone can get their ideas out of their heads with a few buttons pushed. I imagine any genre can be produced using a TENORI-ON and at about $1600 it's fairly afforadle piece of studio future tech. Bring it out at a live show and watch the crowd "Ooooh!" and "Ahhhhh!"

Yamaha's TENORI-ON "Light Beat Machine"

The TENORI-ON is a unique 16 x 16 LED button matrix performance instrument with a stunning visual display. For DJs & producers it is a unique performance tool enabling them to perform using MIDI and load the TENORI-ON with samples to 'jam / improvise' within their set BPMs.

Media artist Toshio Iwai and Yamaha have collaborated to design a new digital musical instrument for the 21st century, TENORI-ON. A 16x16 matrix of LED switches allows everyone to play music intuitively, creating a "visible music" interface.
